Amazon.com Product Description
Featuring a battery-operated monitor displaying speed, distance, workout time, calories burned, and heart rate, this cross-training machine employs a heavy-weighted flywheel-resistance and belt-drive train so it operates silently and smoothly. The elliptical motion blends stair climbing, cycling, skiing, and walking in a single movement for a non-impact aerobic workout that also firms and tones buttocks, hamstrings, quadriceps, thighs, and calves. In forward motion, quadriceps, buttocks, lower abdomen, hips, and thighs are targeted. In reverse motion, hamstrings, lower buttocks, hips, thighs, and calves are targeted. Foam-padded for comfort, dual-action handlebars add an upper-body workout to tone and firm arms, chest, shoulders, and back.
Eight levels of resistance are available and can be varied without interrupting a workout by turning a knob. The cross-trainer's frame is heavy-duty steel. Floor protectors safeguard a workout area and prevent skidding. Assembled (instructions included), the cross trainer measures 56 inches long x 26 inches wide x 60-1/2 inches high and weighs 99 pounds. Built-in rollers permit the machine to be easily moved around.
About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.
Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.
Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

Customer Reviews
Very nicely engineered - a great buy
The Stamina 55-1771 is very nicely engineered and built, with sturdy construction, quiet running, good read-out features (including pulse rate) and the right movement action. I had to apply a few quirts of WD-40 to some of the pivot points to quiet an initial sqeek, but then you wouldn't want it shipped with lots of oil on it. It is a bit more complex to assemble than your usual out-of-the-box, pop-together job, but certainly well worth it considering what you get for the price. At 100 lbs, I won't be lugging it around the house, and it does not collapse, but it certainly is exactly what I wanted for a nice workout.
Good Purchase, for the Money
I researched ellipticals for a couple of weeks before making this purchase. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but I was weary of buying a sub par product. For the price, this machine is well worth it. I assembled it myself in about an hour. I hear from many people here that it has a short stride, but being a woman and 5'11.. I've had no problems and the stride feels fine. After a month of daily use there are a few sqeaks and rattles that have developed but they are normal and have developed in every elliptical that I, or anyone else I know, has owned. So far I am very satisfied. It's a sturdy machine and should only need monthy tightening of the bolts (very quick process) to insure that nothing gets loose over time. It's not a fancy machine, but it delivers a great work out, and won't cost you thousands of dollars.
